What is AITP?

AITP Is...

  • The oldest organization representing the IS professional in the United States.
  • A pioneer in its field for the implementation of CIS Curricula in secondary schools, two-year, and four-year colleges.
  • A source of continuing education for IS professionals and the general public.
  • An advisor to government and industry regarding new and existing legislative issues.
  • A growing network of chapters through which knowledge and ideas are freely exchanged.

The Purpose of AITP

The Association of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONALS (AITP) is an organization comprised of all levels of management personnel who have an interest in the field of information processing. It is dedicated to the improvement of the profession in all areas of business, industry, science, education, and the government.

Its purpose, as stated in the Association Bylaws is:

  • To foster, promote, and develop education and scientific inquiry in the field of data processing and data processing management.
  • To inculcate among it's members a better understanding of the nature and functions of data processing, and to engage in education and research in the technical methods pertaining thereto with a view to their improvement.
  • To collect through research and to disseminate generally, by all appropriate means, all fundamentally sound DP principles and methods.
  • To study and develop improvements in equipment related to data processing.
  • To supply to its members current information in the field of data processing management, and to cooperate with them and with educational institutions in the advancement of the science of data processing.
  • To encourage and promote a professional attitude among its members in their approach to an understanding and application of the principles underlying the science of DP and in their relations to others similary engaged.
  • To foster among executives, the public generally, and the members of the Association a better understanding of the vital business role of data processing, and the proper relationships of data processing to management.
  • To have and to exercise all of the powers of a not-for-profit corporation as provided in the General Not-for-Profit Act of Illinois under which this corporation is organized.

The Code of Ethics in AITP

Members of AITP are governed by a strict Code of Ethics which define the obligations of membership in AITP.

The Standards of Conduct

The AITP Standards of Conduct expand on the Code of Ethics by providing specific statements of behavior in support of each element of the Code. They are not objectivies to be strived for, they are rules that no true professional will violate. It is first of all expected that an informaiton processing professional will abide by the appropriate laws of their country and community.
